Supporting a Rising Star in Espoo

We are very proud to be involved in a project in Espoo, where a public artwork by Lotta Mattila will be the connecting force between three areas of a rising neighbourhood of Niittykumpu.

Public Art Agency Finland works in the project the City of Espoo, the Espoo Museum of Modern Art EMMA, as well as with Ramboll Finland. We make sure that the artwork is created seamlessly in collaboration with the other parts of the huge construction project, and that the interests of different parties involved are taken into account as the project progresses. Thus experts in various fields - the artist as well as the engineer - can focus on their own core competencies, and get to do their best as part of the whole.

One of her most recent creations is called Asuttaja, (roughly translated as "The Habitant" - picture of the scale model above), a winning public art proposal for the developing area of Kalasatama, Helsinki.

Lotta Mattila has risen to the consciousness of the field contemporary sculpture by the end of the year 2016. Mattila approaches the use of animal characters so central in the sculptural traditions with a fresh, interesting and accessible touch. Mattel, in her thirties, has already managed to conquer the galleries of Helsinki, Tallinn, New York and Paris with her enchanting creatures. Recently, his work has been exhibited in the curated urated Summer Show of the Association of Finnish Sculptors (read more about the exhibition).

Her work in Niittykumpu is still a secret, but will consist of several parts, combining her skills as a sculptor to her knowhow in drawing. The piece will be created on the walls of an underpass, as well as the nearby squares, guiding pedestrians between the subway, the nearby housing areas and mall. Though the artwork, the often otherwise dull or even threatening feel of an underpass is transformed into a magical journey to a world of wonder.

Mattila is particularly known for expertise in pottery, which he has acquired a depth mm. studying in the United States.

One of Public Art Agency Finland's key values is, that the art presented in public spaces should represent the best that the field has to offer. This project is an excellent example of a young, exceptionally talented artist bringing her skills to be enjoyed by the general public - and making us very proud to get to work to make that happen.
